2022 SP training at Kaohsiung Veterans Hospital By Peter Tze-Ming Chou
On November 19, 2022, students of WHC-USR completed their SP training at Kaohsiung Veterans Hospital. The training included an introduction to OSCE, tour of facility including the simulation classroom and testing classrooms, how to prepare the script, and simulation practice.
Through small group instruction, six SP Trainers from Kaohsiung Veterans Hospital came to teach the students what they need to know about being a SP. The trainers showed the students how to interpret the script, key information to remember, and what they may encounter during OSCE exam. Most importantly, the trainers showed the students how to act out the patient’s role. There were lots of interactions between the students and their trainers, it was a rewarding experience for everyone.
After a short break, the students and trainers head into the OSCE examination facility for their simulation practice. Everyone took turns playing the role of the patient and the doctor. The simulation is a chance to give the SP a chance to experience what is like during the OSCE exams. This is a unique experience that you would not find in the university classroom. Everyone had fun acting out the different roles.
After everyone has successfully completed the OSCE simulation, it was time for sharing of the day’s experience. All the trainers said that Wenzao’s students were all very smart, they were able to understand and learn the information very quickly unlike the retirees or older professionals who they usually train. The trainers also mentioned how some of the students have a talent in acting, they were able to realistically portrait their role in the script.
The Wenzao students also said that this activity is very rewarding and they all have learned a lot from their trainers. “Being an SP involves acting and medical knowledge, this is something you cannot learn from the classes in Wenzao” said one student. Dr. Ching-Huang Lin, Director of Medical Education and Research at Kaohsiung Veterans Hospital, concluded the by saying that he was very touched to hear how everyone gain so much from the experience and thanked everyone for their participation and efforts.
