柬埔寨華語課程相見歡 Happy First Encounter for Mandarin Class (2022/10/26季慕華撰稿)

繼上一期叫好又叫座的柬埔寨華語課程，在萬千的期盼下終於再次相見歡！原華語教學因國際志工畢業，一度青黃不接，一直到開學後才補足人力，故延至今日（2022/10/25）才進行跨國師生的首度線上接觸，由廖俊芳老師和季慕華老師主持。這次特別感謝華語教學典範廖南雁老師力挺，擔任指導老師，為志工團隊的大小老師們提供寶貴的經驗和建議。同時也感謝「雙林」建勳老師和小蘇老師在上學期打下的優質基礎，並無私分享成果，傳承經驗。這次相見歡主要目的除了雙方自我介紹，特別以雙向溝通，釐清教學和學習的期待與共識，所以邀請徐閤芸老師協助柬埔寨-華語翻譯，她的專業與豐富的跨文化經驗，使線上會議過程順利，圓滿完成。

這期華語教學志工群的組成非常特別，總共11人，包括應華系研究生，大手牽小手帶領大學部的傑出的學妹們負責教學，其中還有英文系具備高段外語能力的學妹加入。大小老師大部分是來自越南，不只華語聽說讀寫能力強，絲毫不輸台灣本地生，更具備高度的教學熱忱，熟悉學習新外語困境的同理心，和挑戰全華語教學的勇氣，來協助鄰國柬埔寨學生學習，實踐聯合國永續發展的精神。柬埔寨想學華語的人數眾多，非常希望能增加學生名額，但考慮學習資源和效果，目前僅招收12名學生，6名來自寺廟書院，另外6名來自其他公立學校，男女皆有，年紀在14至16歲之間。課程每兩週執行75分鐘的教學，學生將分成3組，在不同場地同時學習。如果狀況良好，未來將適時增加名額。這些學生從未學過華語，個性也十分害羞，但都有渴望學習的眼神，而教學的小老師們，更可利用難得的機會運用所學，不只教學相長，還可實踐社會願景，翻轉柬國偏鄉弱勢學生的生涯。

(2022/10/26 Kaohsiung, written by Melody and Yolanda) After the success of the Mandarin class for Cambodian students last semester, our second session finally comes true in the wishes from numerous people. Due to graduation, the previous volunteers were not able to continue and the program underwent some suspension and lack of the teaching force until sometime after the school began. This is the reason why the first teacher-student encounter was postponed until today (2022/10/26), hosted by Prof. Melody Liao and Ms. Yolanda Chi. We are grateful for Prof. Nan-yen Liao, who has been a distinguished model for Chinese teaching, for her full support in mentoring the volunteers by offering precious experience and suggestions. Our appreciation also goes to the two Lins, namely Prof. Chien-hsun Lin, and Prof. Little Su, for their excellent efforts in laying a foundation for quality education, and unreserved sharing of the fruits of their achievements so as to pass on the good work. The purposes of the meeting included not only self-introduction on the two sides but also two-way communication on expectations and consensus between teaching and learning. Therefore, Ms. XX Hsu was particularly invited to assist in Cambodian-Chinese interpretation. With her professionalism and rich cross-cultural experience, our online meeting was conducted smoothly and ended in joy.

The volunteering group for Mandarin teaching of this session consists of 11 members, featuring Chinese teaching background, with graduate students from the Institute of Applied Chinese leading undergraduates of the same department and also one from the English Department with high proficiency in English. Most of the teaching volunteers are from Vietnam. Their language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing have reached the advanced level and there’s hardly any difference between them and the native Chinese-speaking locals in terms of communication. In addition, they are highly enthusiastic in teaching, familiar with difficulties in learning new foreign languages, and courageous in taking the challenge of whole-Chinese language teaching to help students in Cambodia, their neighboring country, and fulfill the goals of United Nations sustainable development. In Cambodia, the demand for learning Chinese is great and an increase in the number of enrollment has been requested several times. However, in consideration of the learning effects, our Mandarin program currently could take only 12 students. In this session, there are 12 students in total: 6 from the temple academies and 6 from the public schools, male and female aged between13 to 16. The course will be conducted every two weeks, each in a period of 75 minutes and students will be divided into three groups and learn at the same time at different locations. If the results are satisfying, then it is possible to include more students in each group at the appropriate time. These students have never learned Chinese and are very shy, but their eyes reflect the yearning for learning. For our teaching volunteers, it is a great opportunity to apply their learnings by teaching through those hands-on tasks to flip the career development of the Cambodian students in rural areas, fulfilling the vision of SDGs.
