A Successful Change – From Winter Camp to Online Teaching (Written by: Tze-Ming Chou, Translated by Yuri Wang)

On March 23, 2022, 16 students from Wenzao and Linkou Elementary met online for the start of the “After School English Caring Program” that will be held every Wednesday from 15:10-16:30. The students from Wenzao had originally planned for an English winter camp back in January, but because of COVID-19, the event was postponed. In order to not waste the efforts of the students, Principal Ye has agreed to let the Wenzao students teach the materials prepared for the Winter Camp in the After School English Caring Program. In the opening ceremony, Principal Ye welcomed all the students and told them how privileged they are to have this opportunity. Professor Tze-Ming Chou, Assistant Professor from English Department at Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, was also present to encourage the young students. He told the students that, “Do not worry about what you know or don’t know about English, I want you to have fun throughout this process. These big brothers and sisters are not here to test your English ability, but they are here to show you that learning English can be easy and fun.” Originally 30 students signed up for the Winter Camp, but now only the 11 students in the after school program can experience the teaching.

After the opening remarks by Principal Ye and Professor Chou, all the students were eager to meet their teachers online. This semester, 5 Wenzao students from the Day 2-Year College are the teachers in After School English Caring Program. The teachers are Kim, Yuri, Justin, Juily, and Cher, all of whom were very enthusiastic to meet their students. The opening class focused on getting to know each other better through ice-breaker games. Students learned to greet each other and introduce their name, age, and their hobbies. These ice-breaker games are important because it helps reduce the distance between the teacher and the students, especially for the elementary students since they are less likely to open up to strangers whom they have just met. This is also a chance for teachers to establish a bond with their students, letting them understand the difficulties that their students may have and plan activities that will suit their needs in the upcoming classes

Once Although there were some technical difficulties in the beginning, everyone overcome adversary and successfully completed the first online class. This program gives Wenzao students a chance to do service learning by connecting with students from the countryside. It also gives the young elementary students a chance to learn through opportunities they may not have from their environment. This win-win situation makes all the efforts of the USR team all worthwhile. At the end of the class, all the elementary students and Wenzao teachers look forward to the next few weeks of classes together
