(2022/3/26, Kaohsiung) A group of 41 Wenzaorians, either by bus or on their motorbikes and scooters, overcame the difficulties in traffic they had encountered and managed to arrive at the venue for the whole-day new volunteer training on the 6th floor of E-Da Cancer Hospital, together with 13 other participants from E-Da University and people from various walks of life. Ever since 2019, WHC-USR has been collaborating with E-Da Hospital to provide a solid volunteer training for the USR “deep-bowl” and micro courses. On E-Da side, nursing professionals and senior volunteers were invited to share related medical knowledge, common medical terms, and years of experience of volunteering. In addition to lectures, a tour around the hospital guided by senior volunteers was arranged to help participants understand better the medical environment such as outpatient services and triage.
In term of the content, one special topic covered life and death and moved numerous participants to tears, who looked forward to being engaged in the service as qualified volunteers more than ever. At the end of the one-day training, a number of students shared their reflection:
A female student who currently studies at Wenzao’s junior college stated that she was glad to be able to attend the training. The tour on the site helped her discovered the different areas in medical science, which she formerly had little understanding of but now acquired basic comprehension after senior volunteers’ illustration. She was also impressed by and showed gratitude to senior volunteers for their selfless devotion. Students early waited for the day to serve on the arranged schedule and to accumulate work experience—a great memory and a perfect chance for an eye-opening experience.
The other students also expressed their opinions respectively, showing their gratitude to Wenzao for offering a micro course for students to participate in medical volunteering, and simulating all possible situations to experience the efforts made by medical personnel and volunteers. It was not until they came to the actual site in the hospital that they witnessed so many nameless heroes who quietly made their dedication. As a result, students learned to feel satisfied and appreciate for what they had been given, and would seize the chance to give back with all their might and efforts.
Finally, two Wenzao undergraduates of the junior years mentioned in agitation that they had not the slightest idea or interest in volunteering but the lectures and training had totally changed their perspective on voluntary work. The unreserved guidance and offer of help made by the nursing professionals and senior volunteers even jerked the tears out of a male student, raising the morale among the participants for volunteering.
The end of the new volunteer training is the beginning of another milestone. Putting on the volunteer vest means a commitment and a mission. Either E-Da Hospital personnel or Wenzao faculty will gladly see the sustainable development of volunteering and the vitality in bringing about social welfare.
