Teacher community: New blue ocean for interpreters and translators
On Friday, July 23 (from 10 am to 11:30 am), nearly 50 teachers from Wenzao (including the teachers from the USR team), Director Mingfang Zheng of the Children’s Medical Department of Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, and Chongwei Lin, the founder of China Social Enterprise Co., Ltd., participated together online in the “New Blue Ocean of Interpreters and Translators” lecture by Chengshu Yang, director of the Intercultural Research Institute of Fu Jen Catholic University.
First of all, the participants watched a video about the accomplishments of the USR over the years. The video mentioned the opportunity to create the USR project, travelling to Cambodia to help disadvantaged children, and establish a multilingual Line account that focuses on the epidemic, so that foreigners in Taiwan can get the most up-to-date information about the epidemic situation in Taiwan.
Speaking of language, Director Mingfang Zheng of the Department of Children’s Medicine of Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital said, “When I went to Cambodia with USR teachers and students a few years ago, I found that English is not common in Cambodia, so that there is a big language barrier in communication, that is when I realized that the integration of international medical and interpreting talents is a very an important part. In addition, Chongwei Lin, the founder of the Social Enterprise Co., Ltd., said, “What you learn now will always be used for a moment in your life, including language. Moreover, language is a tool that AI cannot replace. It will be used in the future. The development trend is limitless.”
Regarding professional knowledge of interpretation and translation, Yang Chengshu, director of the Intercultural Research Institute of Fu Jen Catholic University, analyzed many aspects, such as industry description of interpretation and translation, market prospect, and industry market trends. The job of interpreting includes conference interpreting in the conference industry and medical interpreting in medicine and biotechnology. The difference is that conference interpreting has gradually reduced the manpower requirements, and medical interpreting has become more and more in demand in recent years. In the future, medical technology will become more and more advanced, and there will even be customized medical treatment, such as physical examination, customized diagnosis and treatment, etc., it proves the progress of science and technology and the importance of international medical care. In the future, medical interpreters must make good use of language tools and keep up with the professionalism of doctors so that patients can receive comprehensive medical services.
In recent years, the international medical industry has gradually become globalized, specialized, and diversified. In response to people or insurance companies in various countries seeking lower-cost and higher-quality medical care, many benevolent people and doctors have worked together to implement cross-border medical services. Countries that lack medical facilities can also get complete medical expertise and equipment. On the other hand, interpretation and translation are also part of international medical care. In recent years, the integration of interpretation expertise and medical technology has gradually integrated with the world. One day, international medical care must be a great savior for disadvantaged and remote ethnic groups and a new blue ocean for interpreters.
