Using love to enhance education in rural areas: 4/14 Cambodia International Volunteer recruitment briefing (Written by Sandy Huang; edited by Peter Chou)

The Wenzao USR team has been continuously helping Cambodian children to improve their English, health education, and social life. Due to the COVID-19, it is impossible to go to the Cambodian villages to teach and interact with the children, so Wenzao students use online teaching to encourage children to continue their learning. Replacing short-term assistance with long-term companionship, the Wenzao students have become a role-model, family, and partner in the hearts of the Cambodian children.

At the beginning of the briefing session, TA Jollis Lin handed out the sumptuous meals and drinks for the USR students. While enjoying the meal, Professor Janny Sun gave each of the students an elaborate explanation on becoming an international volunteer, including the application conditions and details. In order to maintain the highest quality of service, Professor Sun also shared the grading standards and interview tips with the participants so that the students can show their best qualities. For example, during the group interview, you should actively raise your hands to speak and talk about your special characteristics, past leadership experience and your motivation for becoming a volunteer. In addition, you should also talk about what abilities you have that can help the USR team and the Cambodian students such as teamwork and sense of responsibility.

At the end of the meeting, Professor Sun and Professor Janet Weng thanked the students for their willingness to participate in this project. They know that the students are not afraid of travelling long distances and are willing to help improve the quality and resources of rural education. The teachers encouraged Wenzao students to become partners, teachers, and best friends of the children in these rural areas, helping them grow and promote social progress.
