New Semester, New Prospect!

Wenzao Healthcare Communication-USR)

Although the Covid-19 pandemic continues in an unpredictable development, most schools around the world have resumed operation after a long period of waiting. Our partner KKS in Cambodia is no exception; on September 21, 2020 KKS faculty and students finally returned happily for the first day of school. Although we have not been able to gather together with our Cambodian friends since the beginning of 2020, WHC-USR team members have not wasted any time, preparing for our international volunteering service with all possible efforts on all feasible projects in light of extending our care consistently to KKS faculty and students and from a post-pandemic perspective. In addition to the daily prayers for the wellbeing of dear KKS friends, WHC-USR team have already simulated KKS conditions and conducted in Cishan Elementary School, Taiwan, an English camp featuring pandemic prevention and hygiene education. In this camp, the rural Taiwanese kids were able to feel truly connected with the Cambodian children when drawing on facial mask covers and writing on heart-shaped greeting cards with pandemic prevention information. In addition, WHC-USR international volunteering students offered online courses of English in the first half of 2020 especially modified for those KKS students, who were not able to return to school for studies

In the first week of the fall semester 2020, we recruited 12 outstanding students full of enthusiasm for altruistic events as our international volunteers. Starting from October, these new recruits will continue the online courses; they will review the English units of the summer sessions, design new materials in accordance with kids’ needs and abilities, conduct the courses, and motivate children for their learning of languages. Another effort we have made is to arouse the attention to the current condition in Cambodia. In view of the current and post-pandemic development, the insufficiency of financial support and material assistance has become and will continue to be severe in Cambodia, especially the food supply for the kids, resulting from the critical conditions and tight resources in every country as well as the difficulty in importing resources from other nations and local transportation.

After learning about the KKS’s financial predicament in operation, WHC-USR immediately cooperated with Asanga NPO and initiated funding KKS for food supply. Currently the donation from the Wenzao faculty has reached USD$2,200. Our international volunteering students also intend to incorporate their efforts as a fund-raising event at Wenzao Charity Fair in December. Hopefully, we will get more students to be better aware of the post-pandemic global problems, to be more positively engaged in volunteering service, and to fulfill global citizenship. When we count the numerous blessings in our life, we appreciate that Taiwan, unlike most other nations, is kept nearly unaffected by the pandemic. Moreover, we are grateful for the chance of being capable of mobilizing surplus resources to help our partnering school and dear friends, who are remote from us in Cambodia but never forgotten.
