The USR team held a final reflection report and celebration of the micro-course on January 5, 2019.After a full semester of study, the students showed a remarkable share of results, and moved all the guests, teachers and students who participated in the event.
When team host teacher shared, she said: “It’s really hard to implement USR project. several times, I decided to say no more. Of course, every time you see the changes, gratitude, harvest and achievements of the students at the end of the semester, you will be full of energy.
The students of the volunteer group shared their reflections on their experience when they went to Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital (KVGH) 高雄榮民總醫院 and E-Da Hospital 義大醫院 as volunteers. They showed the ability of crisis and emergency handling that they did not have and the touching soul growth.
One of the students said: “If you are not volunteer, it doesn’t matter. However, it’s really different if you become a volunteer.” Besides, there were many students who expressed their gratitude that they wanted to appreciate teachers for setting up such a course. In this way they got out from the classroom and in touch with interdisciplinary medical service industry.
Another student mentioned that in the past she thought the health was taken for granted, but when she became the volunteer she just understood the value of health. One student also spoke frankly, before volunteering she really didn’t understand the relationship between marketing courses and volunteering. After taking the course and going to the hospital as a volunteer, she just understood the so-called customer orientation of the marketing class. It is the “humanity” that she observed in the hospital: understand your customer’s needs before planning marketing…
After working as a volunteer, another student said that he realized how hard the nurses worked, and why the nurses in the emergency room should talk to the people so loudly. It’s not the gentle Nightingale he imagined. In particular, one student said that he found himself changing when he was on duty for the third time: He became more considerate and tolerated the families of patients who were anxious, and talked impolite when they were out of control.
The student of the Picture Book’s Group presented a variety of children’s picture books. The theme covered all aspects of education, environmental protection, life education, character education and so on. These picture books were made by the students themselves. They took their own hand-made picture books and propellers to Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital and E-Da Hospital to spread fun with sick children. Through storytelling and drama performance, the sick children are happy, so they temporarily forgot the physical pain and immersed in the story. The Minister of the Department of Pediatrics of Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Yi-Suyan Chiu said: “I see the efforts and enthusiasm of the USR team and the students, and especially the support from Wenzao. Today’s activity is very touching and successful!” The following video linkage shows Dr. Chiu‘s sharings. (https://www.facebook.com/1782335585179795/posts/2039722849441066/)

Finally, Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital and E-Da Hospital also awarded certificates of appreciation and service to be grateful to the teachers and students of Wenzao for their hard work. Dean of Academic Affairs Yao-Tang Lin, Dean of Student Affairs Jin-Pei Chen, Dean of College of English and International Studies Wen-Chuan Lin and Dean of College of Humanities Education Jie-Yu Tsai also encourages students to continue to embrace enthusiasm and pursue the goodness of life.
We hope that you will not forget the enthusiasm for participating in service learning during this semester. We really appreciate that “It is more bless to give than to receive!” Keep up with “Live While We’re Young” and make your life “different.”
